Wat Phra That doi Suthep, Chiang Mai

The holiest shrine in the north of  Thailand, Wat Phrathat doi Suthep was build in 1386 underneath miraculous conditions. It crowns the doi Suthep mountain on the western outskirts of Chiang Mai.

History of Wat Phra That doi Suthep

Construction on Wat doi Suthep started in 1386 underneath King Kuena (r.1367-88) and was fully -constructed  after few years. The temple was periodically enlarged and embellished over the subsequent centuries.


Construction would have been a hard task, with workers have to move supplies through thick forest : the road leading to the temple was solely established in 1935. the trendy paved road was a joint work of communities throughout the Chiang Mai district, each of whom contributed one,300-foot sections.

Myth and Mystery

According to legend, a magical relic doubled itself just before it was enshrined at Wat Suan Dok . an appropriate place thus had to be found to protect the new relic.

Unable to make a decision on the location, the king placed the relic in a portal shrine on the back of an elephant and waited to see where the animal would take it. , the  elephant walked up to the highest of doi Suthep mountain, shouted 3 times, turned around 3 times, and died. The temple was instantly designed on the miraculously-selected location.

What to see at Wat Phra That doi Suthep

The temple is a component of doi Suthep park, a richly forested space supporting some 330 species of birds. The park additionally includes Phuping Palace and Mon Tha Than Falls, the later believed by some  people to consist of evil spirits.

Doi Suthep mountain rises approximately 1000m (3,542 ft) on top of sea level; there are awesome  views over the town of Chiang Mai to be had from the temple's moderate terrace. The terrace is enclitic by giant bells that are rung by pilgrims to bring luck. On the north-west corner of the terrace is a sculpture of the legendary elephant who selected the location of the temple.

Enclosed by a frescoed cloister, the upper platform is home to a tightly-packed complex of bells, tiny shrines, golden umbrellas-bells,  and Buddha statues. Shoes should be removed and shoulders should be covered before getting into this sacred location.

In the center of the upper terrace is that the great chedi, a 16th-century enlargement of the 14th-century original. The dazzling gold-plated temple is sculptured on Wat Phra That Haripunjaya in Lamphun, once the greatest temple in the Chiang Mai region.
